  8.  AB    OBJECTIVES--Women are now at the centre of the AIDS epidemic and it has
  9.        become clear that because of several epidemiological biological and
  10.        sociological reasons women are very vulnuerable to HIV-infection. This
  11.        study was undertaken to spread AIDS awareness amongst mid level and
  12.        grass root women. METHODOLOGY--The programme is being implemented
  13.        through various branches of All India women's Conference. AIWC is a
  14.        women's voluntary organization with an existing network of women's group
  15.        and an efficient infrastructure. It has 500 branches throughout India. A
  16.        three tier system was used to rapidly reach maximum number of women by
  17.        integrating AIDS awareness into already existing activities of these
  18.        branches such as family planning. Literacy etc. RESULTS--So far eight
  19.        regional programmes have been success fully conducted and several
  20.        outreach activities have been initiated in different regions of India.
  21.        This paper will deal in details the strategies used in spreading AIDS
  22.        awareness efficiently and rapidly in large number of women. The paper
  23.        will also discuss the types of programmes into which AIDS awareness has
  24.        been integrated and the social and ethical concerns of the women
  25.        attending these programmes.
